Call for Artists - May 5 Paint Out IN the Rialto Theatre

PLEIN AIR PAINTERS OF CHICAGO - SOUTHWEST (PAPC-SW)

WHAT:

We have been given permission to paint not just the Exterior, but the INTERIOR of the Rialto Square Theatre in downtown Joliet -- not the walls, but paintings OF the walls; the esplanade, patterned after the Palace of Versailles; the grand arches of the ceilings; chandeliers; staircases; rotunda and the very proscenium itself.

Please check out this website to see the magnificence of this theatre and what a gift this is to us.

http://www.rialtosquare.com/

WHY:

BECAUSE - WE CAN! WHAT A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY!
Because - WE HAVE RECEIVED A WONDERFULLY WARM WELCOME FROM THE MANAGEMENT OF THE RIALTO SQUARE THEATRE,
Because - THIS COULD BECOME AN ANNUAL 'PLEIN AIR' EVENT -- BRINGING ARTISTS FROM ALL OVER; PRIZES AND PLENTY OF FUN,
Because - RARELY DO WE HAVE SUCH A RICH ARRAY OF SUBJECT MATTER TO PAINT IN ONE PLACE,
Because - WE CAN ENJOY OUR ROLE AS DIPLOMATS FOR THE ARTS, and

IN THE HISTORY SECTION OF THE RIALTO WEBSITE, YOU WILL FIND SOME IMAGES AND INFORMATION THAT CAN WHET YOUR APPETITE FOR THE SPLENDOR OF THIS BUILDING. AND THERE IS ALSO INFORMATION ABOUT THE ENTERTAINERS -- VAUDEVILLE, STAGE AND SCREEN -- WHOSE SPIRITS HOVER THERE, INVITING US TO JOIN THEM.

http://www.rialtosquare.com/palace_main.htm

AND BECAUSE - IMAGINE...........AS WE PAINT IN THE EMPTY THEATRE, AND WE GET INTO THAT UNIVERSAL ARTIST EXPERIENCE -- THE SILENT WORLD OF LOOK, COMPARE THE WORLD OUTSIDE WITH THE WORLD WITHIN, AND STRIVE TO RE-CREATE BOTH ON OUR CANVAS -- INVITING THE SPIRITS OF THOSE ARTISTS OF THE PAST TO WORK WITH US. WE THEN, FOR THIS SHORT TIME, CAN STEP INTO THEIR WORLD -- THEY INTO OURS -- FOR WHAT IS YET ANOTHER CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS..

WHO: ANYONE WITH ENOUGH OF A LOVE FOR PAINTING TO JOIN US. YOU CAN BRING YOUR IN-DEPTH OIL/PASTEL/WATERCOLOR/GOUACHE/ACRYLIC, OR HOME-MADE SETUP, OR A SIMPLE SKETCHPAD AND PENCIL, OR PEN AND INK -- BUT THE THING YOU CAN'T COME WITHOUT IS YOUR SPIRIT FOR FUN AND CAMARADERIE IN THE ARTS!

WHEN:

May 5th is the only Saturday they did not have booked. As it is, we must be very careful to pick up after ourselves because the entertainment for that evening is DON RICKLES & JOAN RIVERS. We will be sure to exit before we catch any of their comments about our paintings!

WE CAN MEET AT A LATER TIME THAN USUAL TO ALLOW OUR FELLOW ARTISTS TO TRAVEL THEIR DISTANCES.
WE WILL MEET AT 10:30 AM AND WORK UNTIL 2:30 PM. DEPENDING ON OUR NUMBERS, WE WILL THEN BREAK INTO SMALL GROUPS LED BY PAPC - SW MEMBERS TO DO OUR UNIQUE "SHOW, TELL, AND ASK" SESSION.

AND, WE CAN THEN CELEBRATE OUR WONDERFUL DAY -- WHICH WILL BE LESS ABOUT GETTING THE BEST PLEIN AIR PAINTING AND MUCH MORE ABOUT COMING TOGETHER FOR A GREAT TIME IN THE COMPANY OF EACH OTHER AND IN THE NAME OF OUR PASSION.

TRAVELERS SHOULD BE ON THEIR WAY HOME BY 3:30 PM.

Paint Out Site Saturday, February 24th - Riverside

WHY:

Awhile ago I invited folks to provide us with some suggestions for paint out sites. Susan Hong-Sammons responded with the following thoughts and information:

"If you decide to come paint in Riverside. I suggest everyone going to their website and printing out a map of my little village..."

http://www.riverside-illinois.com/index.html

(Here's the map:)

http://www.riverside-illinois.com/riversidemap.htm

"...Then they'll see all the parks etc......"

Susan also told me that in the Spring there are many flowering trees. So, if we get acquainted with the place now, we will be ready IN JUST A FEW WEEKS to capture the color of Spring. And, since we may be caught in the middle of a deluge, a little village with some possible places to come in out of the rain, might be perfect.

WHERE: "I think the best place to meet is in front of the library."

http://www.riversidelibrary.org/Hours.htm

(Here are the directions to the Library):

http://www.riversidelibrary.org/directions.htm

"The parking is free and centrally located to everything - park, river, train depot, stone built city hall etc. It's quite a picturesque Victorian village. I've enjoyed painting here all seasons but then I love grays." Susan Hong-Sammons.

WHEN: Saturday, February 24th 8:30 AM thru 12:30 PM for our tell, show and ask.

So, click away and meet us in front of the library in Riverside. And, THANK YOU, SUSAN, for showing us the way to this exciting new place to paint!

NEXT TWO PAINTOUTS NOV 25 & DEC 2

WHY:

TO HELP YOU PLAN -- AND DECIDE FOR THE SHOW, I AM SENDING ON THE PAINT OUT SITES FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS -- SO YOU CAN FIND A PLACE THAT WILL WORK FOR YOU TO GET YOUR PAINTINGS!

WHAT:

THOUGH WE CAN PRAY FOR SNOW, THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES. SO, I AM THINKING OF OTHER THINGS THAT IMPLY WINTER.

THEREFORE:

THIS SATURDAY -- NOVEMBER 25TH

PAINT OUT SITE IS A CUT-YOUR-OWN CHRISTMAS TREE FARM -- IDE'S TREE FARM -- IN DOWNER'S GROVE. THERE ARE ACRES OF TREES TO BE CUT, AND A STAND OF TREES THAT ARE ALREADY CUT.

I spoke with CHARLIE at the Ide's Tree Farm. He said we would be no problem. There are port - a- potties. If you get there before I do, ask 'the man' who is likely to be Charlie, where we can park. He said to drive further down their road and we can park unfettered by the comings and goings.

We will meet at that end of the road -- check for my yellow truck -- at 8:30 AM. We will decide on a place to reconvene when we get there.

I have never been to this place, but Charlie seemed like a nice person, helpful and welcoming.
(for later elaboration) of people, kids, etc., carrying and cutting their trees, while we can paint-in the non-moving items of the ambience.

CHECK OUT THEIR WEBSITE FOR DIRECTIONS, ETC.:

http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/trees/treefarms-detail.cfm?id=35

From I-55, take Lemont Road North (exit 271B) to 3rd traffic light, turn West on 83rd Street and go 1/2 mile to farm on North side of road at the foot of the hill.

IF YOU NEED A CHRISTMAS TREE, BRInG ALONG A SAW AND YOU CAN KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE.

________________________________________________________________________________

NEXT SATURDAY -- DECEMBER 2

THE BIRDHAVEN GREENHOUSE AT HIGHLAND PARK IN JOLIET IS HAVING THEIR ANNUAL POINSETTIA SHOW AND SALE.

THERE IS A GREATER POSSIBILITY OF SNOW FOR THIS DECEMBER WEEKEND. IT WOULD MAKE THE SITE EVEN BETTER WITH THE WOODS, RIVER, AND ROLLING HILLS. HOWEVER, THE POINSETTIAS ARE GOOD ENOUGH!

I spoke with Kevin at the Greenhouse to see if we would be a bother during their sale. (This is a big sale so there will be lots of paintable subjects carrying poinsettias. Another camera op.) He said we could paint outside, but that he would prefer it if only two people could set up indoors -- not blocking one of the inside sidewalks. And of course we all know where the facilities are there and that we can come in to warm our hands over the morning, even if we have set up outdoors.

Check out the website of the Birdhaven Greenhouse for directions and other info:

http://www.jolietpark.org/facilities/greenhouse.shtml

And if you are interested in specific information regarding the poinsettia sale, check out/download this;

http://www.jolietpark.org/NEWS.pdf

Meet in the parking lot next to the building at 8:30 AM and reconvene (probably indoors) at 12:30 PM for our Tell, Show and Ask

PAPC - SW GROUP SHOW -- GET READY

IT IS HERE AGAIN!     WE WERE INVITED BACK!    IT IS A RE --- PEAT!

WHERE:

We will have our SECOND ANNUAL PAPC - SW SHOW at the TAVERN CLUB at the top of Michigan Avenue from December 16th 2006 thru January 31, 2007.

The Tavern Club is a prestigious club that was founded in 1927  "to encourage the arts, intellectual recreation and a good humored interest in life."   It resides in its own two stories atop the 333 North Michigan Avenue building at the corner of Michigan and Wacker (kiddy-corner from the Wrigley Building).   I serendipitously happen to have my downtown office in this building which is an Art Deco delight.

Check out the website at:     www.thetavernclub.com

We are SOOO lucky!  Thank you Scott Tallman, wherever you read this, for introducing us to  this great opportunity!

And thanks to us all in PAPC -SW for  the great work and great job last year that helped us to get us this second opportunity.

Eligibility:

One painting, done on a PAPC - SW outing, is sufficient to enter it along with one studio painting.   We will continue our presentation option of plein air and studio, for those who want it.    Or, you may submit TWO plein air paintings  done with PAPC - SW, instead of a Studio, if you prefer.  Whether more paintings will be possible will depend on how many persons sign up to show.    Once you are entered, If a painting sells, you may choose to replace it rather than keeping it on the wall from the run of the show.

In addition to our regular Paint-Outs (This Saturday) we will have WEEKLY Paint-Outs from November 18th thru December 9th.   This will give us plent of opportunities  to get paintings to Show.   (That means November 18th, 25th, December 2nd and 9th).    They would like Winter, Fall paintings if possible so this time of year for paint outs is ideal.    We can have a reason to pray for early snow!

The registration fee is $35

The Tavern Club requests a  15% Commission.

NOTE:    I have seen some gorgeous paintings over the last year.   I truly hope you will all SHOW THEM OFF!

IMPORTANT DATES:

Monday, November 27th  --- Statement of Intent.

I will need to know how many of you plan to show so that I know how much space can be allotted to each artist.   This depends entirely on how many people plan to Show.

Though we all tried to set firm limits last year based on size of space per artist, the Club felt we could do a much better job of presenting  a less crowded Show.   I know many of your expectations last year were based on the Show at the Palette & Chisel.   But, the Tavern Club wants a 'less is more' feeling this year.   So, we will start with a limit of two pieces per artist and, if fewer artists submit, we can adjust upward.

REGISTRATIONS:

Registration forms will be sent out to you in the next few weeks.  They will be due by:

MONDAY -- DECEMBER 11TH    -----    SNAIL MAILED REGISTRATIONS WITH ALL SPECIFIC DATA REGARDING ARTIST AND PAINTINGS  MUST BE POSTMARKED BY  THIS DATE.

TUESDAY -- DECEMBER 12TH    ------- EMAILED REGISTRATIONS WITH ALL SPECIFIC DATA REGARDING ARTIST AND PAINTINGS MUST BE SENT BY MIDNIGHT THIS DATE.

PAINTING DROP OFF OPTIONS WILL BE ANNOUNCED LATER:

SATURDAY -- December 16th    HANG THE SHOW

FRIDAY -- January 19th  Opening Reception

Because we are at risk of losing our audience due to the busy social calendars over the Holidays, we will have our Opening Reception on Friday, January 19th, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

In that way, we can each bring our friends for leisurely and festive lunches at the Tavern Club during the Holidays while the Show is hanging, but opt for the Friday evening Gala once folks have had a chance to catch their breaths after the First of the year.

HELP NEEDED:

1.  LET ME KNOW YOUR INTENTIONS TO ENTER ASAP -- BUT BY NOVEMBER 27TH.

2.  I CAN USE FIVE TO SEVEN VOLUNTEERS TO HELP HANG THE SHOW ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16TH.

3.  IMAGES OF PAINTINGS YOU KNOW YOU WILL ENTER -- FOR USE ON AN INVITATION.   IF YOU KNOW A PAINTING YOU WANT TO USE AND WOULD LIKE ME TO BRING MY DIGITAL CAMERA TO CAPTURE A GOOD IMAGE OF IT FOR REPRODUCTION, LET ME KNOW SO THAT WE CAN ARRANGE THIS TO COINCIDE WITH A PAINT-OUT.

More as we go,,,,,,

Essentially, you go South on Boughton Road off of 355.   WATCH FOR THE SIGNS.  At the intersection of Schmidt Rd. turn West on Trout Farm Drive.

Parking lot is the first thing you will come to.

OR
The Website has a map in pdf that quickly downloads.

WHY:

First Reason:

It is near everyone.   This quiet, peaceful, lovely place is off of Boughton Road down a paved lane to the West.

And it is laid out in a wonderful way for painters.   The lakes can be viewed in layers going into the background.   It is a beautifully groomed place.   You can walk completely around the lakes.   It is adjacent to the DuPage River trail -- you can find a spot over there as well.

 It's a great little find!

Paint Out Saturday August 26th - Cathedral of St Raymond's - Joliet

WHAT: The Cathedral of St Raymond, Joliet, Illinois

St. Ray's is a quite magnificent Cathedral, built in the 50's.    It has some architectural uniquenesses and occupies nearly a full city block.   We have permission to work inside from many vantage points, or outside also from many vantage points of gardens around the Church and a covered cloister garden adjacent to the body of the Church itself.

I TOLD THEM WE ARE QUIET AS CHURCH MICE.

There is parking in a lot to the North of the Church.  There are facilities within the Church.

You can check out their website:

http://www.straymond.net/

This is an image (severely cropped) that I took from the wedding of a friend awhile back. It gives a thumbnail of just the altar to suggest scale.

WHEN: SATURDAY AUGUST 26TH AT 8:30 AM. TO 12:30 PM CRITIQUE.

WHY:

In the late 60's I attended a show of the works of a then promising young artist, Richard Schmid.   Though I couldn't afford any of the paintings, the works left a vivid impression.    I remembered one in particular.   It was a small painting, the result I was told, of a trip to Europe.    It was of a side altar/grotto in a small church -- old stone walls, and candles burning vividly in the red votary.   I could almost hear the gritty sound of shoes along the stone floor and smell the traces of incense in the air.   That simple, small two dimensional image had the power to transport me to the place of that side altar.

Nearly two decades went by and during a break in a Saturday morning  portrait class I was doing with Clayton Beck, CJ, at the Palette & Chisel, I mentioned the strength of that painting, the experience and that memory to him.   He said he knew exactly the image I was referring to and took me to his locker to get a slide of it.    Lo,   there was the beautiful church interior -- and even in the form of the small transparency, it still had the power to transport.

Since first seeing that image, I have understood the potential of the interiors of churches as subjects.   Certainly the hands of a great artist make a profound difference.    But, the setting is also one that intrinsically holds meaning.    A church -- a holy place, whether an edifice, or a canyon --  is a place where generations have moved in procession  through the ceremonies and passages of life -- where they have been pulled along via the greatest source of our strength as humans -- the ability to believe in something beyond  -- and thus, the ability to hope.   In such places reside the spirit of the human condition, represented each day by the burning of a votive, or the sun creating dust beams as it enters through stained glass windows.

SO --- Folks,   I thought that these places should/could be added to our places to paint -- places where perhaps the spirits gather and where those spirits can be invited to take our brushes and use our hands to paint themselves.

I thought a good place to begin (to help us to gain access to other places in our future endeavors) was a Cathedral -- establishes a good precedence.

Thus,    our first 'holy place' paint out site is scheduled this Saturday,  August 26th at the Cathedral of St Raymond's the home of the Joliet Catholic Diocese.

There are many such holy places in the SouthWest suburbs of Chicago -- Synagogues, Mosques, Temples, Chapels, grottos, old and new.     Please act as Scouts for others for us.

AND BECAUSE IT MIGHT RAIN SATURDAY -- NICE TO BE INSIDE.

WHERE:

St. Raymond's is located at 604 North Raynor Avenue in Joliet. We can gather at the Parking Lot to the North of the building at 8:30 AM --- free parking. Paste in the following line to get the Google map.

Looking forward to seeing you all......

Paint Out Sat August 12 - Naperville - Centennial Park

WHEN: Saturday, August 12 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM critique.

WHAT: Our Paint Out Site this weekend will be the Riverwalk at Centennial Park in Naperville.

WHY: Check this out! PASTE THIS it into your browser line -- let it load and then move the items around to see the overview and enjoy the virtual tour. It looks as though this location offers us great reflective surfaces, trees, a clock tower, a carillon that plays at 11:00 AM, covered bridges, a fountain shaped like a dandelion, paddle boats and even a chance to take a dip should the mood strike.

http://www.napervilleparks.org/parksfacilities/riverwalk/tour.html

WHERE:

Let's meet at the parking lot in front of the 'bathhouse'. It looks like this entrance is on Jackson Street where West Street intersects with it. Look for my yellow car. We can get out bearings, explore from here, find out 'sites' and navigate from there. We can scope out the facility situation when we get there.

Here is a map to Naperville. Paste this ALL into your browser window to have mapquest take you to Centennial Park.
